Darebin Council acknowledges the importance of the City’s cultural heritage and maintains a substantial collection of contemporary artworks and historical items that reflect the artistic, social and political aspirations of the local community.

The purpose of the Darebin Art Collection is to inspire, inform, engage and connect the community in an appreciation of the visual arts and local heritage, and to support artists in their endeavours to contribute to a vibrant municipal culture. The Collection belongs to the Darebin community and provides a diverse visual record of the thoughts, actions and ideas which are influencing and affecting the community.

Bundoora Homestead Art Centre’s Board of Management works with curatorial staff to guide and shape the Darebin Art Collection Policy and assist with acquisitions. Leading visual arts specialists are appointed to the Acquisition Advisory Panel to provide strategic advice in securing new acquisitions and to help ensure each work meets the guiding principles of the Darebin Art Collection Policy.

The collection comprises contemporary visual arts including: paintings, works on paper, photography, video, ceramics, textiles and sculpture; urban and public art; and heritage artefacts relating to Bundoora Homestead.

Artists represented in the collection include: Brook Andrew, Trevor ‘Turbo’ Brown, Penny Byrne, Megan Cope, Daniel Crooks, Georgina Cue, DAMP, Marlene Gilson, Dale Harding, Siri Hayes, Karla Dickens, Eugenia Lim, Raquel Ormella, Steaphan Paton, Polixeni Papapetrou, Yhonnie Scarce, Shannon Smiley, Vipoo Srivilasa, David Wadelton and Peter Waples Crowe.

The collection is displayed around Darebin in a variety of facilities including Bundoora Homestead Art Centre, Preston and Northcote Town Halls, Darebin Arts and Entertainment Centre, Bundoora Park, Darebin libraries, customer service centres, civic and leisure centres while public artworks are displayed in the streets and parks throughout the municipality.
